I am an American-born Korean (Korean American). I married a half-white, half-black, golf-playing man from the upper Midwest. When we married, he unknowingly walked into to the mystifying (and sometimes frustrating) world of Korean-American culture.

Out of our sometimes painful, sometimes hilarious, journey grew a great desire to help others who are facing similar challenges. I often wonder how many other people are enduring misunderstandings, foibles, and veritable social bombs as they foray into the Korean-American social environment. It’s a tragedy that the blunders must be repeated time and again.

So, in the interest of helping those who have yet to walk into cross-cultural doo-doo, David and I will be posting our learnings, reflections, and some embarrassing moments. We don’t have all the answers, or even most of them. What we do have is a willingness to share our experiences and engage in mutual dialogue to help bridge cultural gaps, and perhaps more importantly, to laugh together.

So friends, please freely share your thoughts, stories and insights. Our desire is to help the well-meaning westerner avoid the most obvious steaming piles as they engage with Korean-American society. We welcome thoughts on whether or not certain posts especially speak to you, particular topics of interest, points of confusion, and your own stories to share.
